Intelligent Giving's Accountability Log

WE WANT TO MEASURE how accountable charities are. We want to do this so we can make our charity profiles (published on our main website) more useful. At the moment, our profiles show how transparent charities are. If they can reflect charities' accountability as well, then the profiles will be more useful.

We began trying to measure accountability in early 2007. We thought it would be a straightforward task; but it has proved to be exceptionally difficult. The purpose of this Accountability Log is to put our evolving thinking on the subject into the public domain and start a debate about it. We hope this will make our conclusions stronger, more acceptable and more accountably arrived at.

The major questions we've faced so far are these:

1. What is accountability?
2. Can it be measured?
3. Should it be measured?
4. If so, how should it be measured?

Each of them has its own difficulties. Yet especially hard to define has been the term 'accountability' itself. Whilst grappling towards an undersanding of its meaning, we have, however, received lots of help. Principally, we have benefited from the advice of the One World Trust, HAP International, New Philanthropy Capital and, above all, Keystone.

This advice has led us to the point where we now question whether 'accountability' is in fact the correct term to use - but that's something we're still scratching our heads over. And we'll be posting our thoughts on the matter very soon.
